The Power of Love, the Hope of the Future
Announcing the Jeffrey Glazer Athletic Scholarship at the New College of Florida
It has been more than six months since my beloved Jeffrey left us, enough time to cement his memory in our hearts. I’ve kept a big photo of him on the wall of our home. He looks so happy, and so handsome. I like to smile back at him.
Now, to friends and to readers of this blog who responded so warmly to his obituary, I am writing to commemorate him not just in our hearts but in a more tangible way.
I’m setting up an athletic scholarship in his name, at the New College of Florida. I am writing to seek your contribution, which is tax deductible.
Anything you can donate — $100, $1000 or more — will be matched by an Anonymous Donor, up to $50,000.
The Jeffrey Glazer Athletic Scholarship is open to any student athlete, in any sport the school offers, who exemplifies the character that defined Jeffrey’s life.
You can learn more about the New College of Florida here. Gov. DeSantis recently restructured the board of directors to refocus on a classic liberal arts education. When I toured the campus a few weeks ago — it’s in Sarasota — the curriculum seemed loaded with options to nourish the interests of students — theater, art, marine biology, sciences, literature, finance, medicine, healthcare. The new board also decided to beef up the athletic department, to attract students of discipline and grit. They welcomed the story of Jeffrey Glazer’s athleticism and perseverance.
On the campus are beautiful banyan trees. Anna Lazzara, studying an eclectic mix of subjects that matches her interests – art, religion, philosophy and museums – suggested the new school teams should be called The Mighty Banyans, and designed their logo. “I designed the Mighty Banyan to represent the undeniable spirit of New College, which to me is the combination of a supportive community and its stunning natural landscape,” she wrote. “The banyan trees on campus have long been a central gathering place for students, and I wanted to embrace that as a symbol of this one-of-a-kind institution. The mascot is an ode to the New College spirit and I hope it will inspire resilience strength and growth within our campus community.”
Here’s a photo of me — doing the Mighty Banyan pose — with team baseball players.
