So Much to Celebrate on Our Birthday
My father, a WW2 veteran and avid student of the American Revolution, was fond of wishing everyone he encountered on the Fourth of July a “Happy Birthday.” This led to many puzzled faces, until he would explain that it was a birthday for all of us.
This year, as I ponder the fate of our nation, it seems to me that Thomas Jefferson’s words in the Declaration of Independence have never seemed more relevant.
We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
Maybe that’s what the 2024 is about — empowering the people to “alter or abolish” the government we have been bequeathed. Plus, as former President Trump likes to say, “We are winning, winning, winning” and suddenly I feel like celebrating.

The culture wars seem to be retreating a bit from insanity. Following Europe’s lead, more and more states are outlawing the medical mutilation of young girls and boys. This year’s Pride Month seemed a bust — in NYC, Queers for Palestine gays clashed with transgender gays. Usually eating one’s own is a sign of a disintegrating movement. Of course the trans month was inaugurated most infamously in Idaho, where a local bar proclaimed it “Heterosexual Awareness Month” and offered reduced price drinks to cis folks. Riley Gaines had a few victories outside the swimming pool — the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected Lia Thomas’ appeal to overturn a ban on biological males competing against women so he/she could compete in the Olympics. (Or, as Fox News put it, “Lia Thomas’ Olympics Dreams Dashed.” Still not on our side.) Most importantly, public opinion has shifted. A Pew study found that a majority of Americans — 65% — now believe gender is determined at birth, up from 56% seven years ago. Maybe not all publicity is good? Corporations and sports teams got the message too — Bud Light did not mention Pride Month in its advertising, and the Dodgers did not host the transgender anti-Catholic hate group, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, who last year insulted Catholics by pole dancing on a crucifix.
The Supreme Court issued rulings in the last few days of its term with vast impact for the criminal prosecutions against Donald J. Trump and the Jan 6 prisoners. Constitutional scholar Jonathan Turley called it “insurrection-lite,” as if the court downgraded the J6 charges from insurrection to trespassing. As I read it, the court also said that a former president cannot be prosecuted for protesting the election results on his watch. Of course Democrats do this regularly and have never been prosecuted for it, though the damage Hillary Clinton has done to the country by not showing magnanimity in defeat is incalculable. But will our DOJ on Steroids obey this ruling? Not if Biden’s actions are any indication — he is forgiving student loans even after SCOTUS said it’s unconstitutional without congressional approval. And he is leaving the border open to some 20 million illegals who have no interest in becoming Americans, learning English or waving flags on the Fourth of July. Might he be liable in a criminal court? As Biden (or whoever that was) said in slamming the decision, “No one’s above the law.” He warned Americans not to vote for Trump because now “he’ll be more emboldened to do whatever he pleases whenever he wants to.” How wonderful!
There are so many good things about last week’s Trump v Biden debate it’s hard to know where to start. First, and as the Daily Wire’s Andrew Klavan noted, this is little reported, Trump won! Not just that Biden was exposed as a doddering old senile fool but that Trump has changed too — he was calmer, more reasoned, more presidential. And the other great and under reported victory is that the media is exposed as liars, shills for the Democrats. They’ve known for four years that the president is not in his right mind, but they have covered for him. Part of their hysteria post-debate is because they want to play at being journalists again. That’s why the NYT et al are calling for Biden to leave the race — to take their readers minds off the fact that as recently as last week they were promoting the lie that videos of Biden falling or wandering or dazing were “cheap fakes.” Turns out the whole constellation of left-wing Dem media — they are the cheap fakes.
Of course, Dems tend to double-down when backed into a corner, so we best guard against complacency. The DOJ is prosecuting Dr. Eithan Haim, a whistleblower who told journalist Christopher Rufo that Texas Children’s Hospital was secretly continuing with mutilating surgeries on minors — even after the hospital announced it had stopped. Haim pled not guilty to four felony counts of HIPAA violations. He faces 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. If you can afford it, please support him. "I have maintained from day one that I have done nothing wrong. We're going to fight this tooth and nail, stand up for whistleblowers everywhere," Haim said.
A weaponized DOJ and its Gestapo FBI show no sign from backing away from prosecutions of political foes. This is Merrick Garland’s revenge, and his legacy.
But We the People are mightier than they. So hoist a flag, sing a rousing rendition of God Bless America, and let’s get this party started. Oh, and Happy Birthday.
