Smile. Trump Is Delivering the Little Things Too
Amid the cacophony of hysteria, panic and clicks that occupies our Social Media influencer class, it is easy to miss all the little things that President Trump has done to improve the life of this nation.
Oh sure, there’s still lots to worry about — the organized violent assaults on ICE officers, the prospect of losing seats in next year’s midterm elections, the ghost of pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and his stain on the US Justice Department.
But little things are making me smile. Consider:
In early March, Trump signed an executive order designating English as the official language of the U.S. Amid grumbling from Spanish-language truck drivers facing layoffs, classes are now offered to teach them to read English road signs. And this week, Attorney General Pam Bondi said the Justice Department would lead “a coordinated effort across federal agencies to minimize non-essential multilingual services.” Decades ago, a former English professor & US senator named S.I. Hayakawa warned that if America did not protect its language, it would lose it. Now, nearly 50 years later, Trump has delivered. It would no doubt be good if Congress codified this EO, even better if corporate America stopped requiring us to click #1 for English. But still, a wonderful moment.
General Motors announced this week it was planning to expand production of gas-powered vehicles. In 2021, then GM CEO Mary Barra said GM would offer only EVs by 2035, in the name of cutting carbon emissions. Ever since, auto dealerships have witnessed huge stocks of EV cars rusting in their lots. Now, “the hype is dwindling, and companies are again cheering consumer choice,” said CNBC. “Automakers from Ford Motor and General Motors to Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin are scaling back or delaying their electric vehicle plans.” I’ve nothing against EV cars. Nothing for them either. Happy to let the marketplace decide.
This week Congress is passing a rescission package — and it is modest, a $9 billion rollback of spending at NPR, PBS, USAID just for this fiscal year. It saddens me that this baby step is not larger, but I am vastly amused by the Dem hysteria over its passage — “people will die” if they don’t have access to public broadcasting, apparently — and NPR CEO Katherine Mayer’s assertion to CNN that “as far as the accusations that we’re biased, I’d stand up and say, ‘Please show me a story that concerns you.’” Happy day, MAGA brought the receipts, led by Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana. Torn from the pages of NPR headlines: Country music and interstate highways represent white racism. President Biden’s debate performance did not change the election. There is no evidence biological men have an advantage over women. If your audience wants propaganda, NPR, go for it, but not on our taxpayer dollars.
In Texas, organizers at a local baseball game announced they would not be playing the National Anthem. Players were instructed to take the field. But then a funny thing happened. The crowd stood, took off their caps and spontaneously began singing the Star Spangled Banner. Ok, they were a bit out of harmony, with one side of the field a little in front of the other. But their message was loud and clear. This is our country and no bureaucrat can tell us when we can be proud.
Finally, the ever-bouncy CNN pollster Harry Enten astonished yet another dour-faced CNN anchor by announcing that the alleged backlash among MAGA over Trump’s handling of the Epstein files, well, not so much.
“Republicans who approve of Trump — look at our CNN poll. The prior one: 86%. The one out this week: 88% with Republicans. How about Quinnipiac? The prior poll: 87% approval for Republicans. This week out: 90% with Republicans! If anything, Donald Trump's approval rating has gone up since this whole Epstein saga started. He is at the apex or close in terms of his popularity with Republican voters."
To which my brother-in-law asked, “Who are those 10%?”
Keep smiling. After all he’s been through for us — the assassination attempts, the prosecutions in four different trials, the reputation smearing by intel agents and other Democrats — who are we to doubt him? As WH Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt often says, “Trust President Trump.” And I do.
