Two assassination attempts, that we know of, in the last two months. In the latest case, wannabe assassin Ryan Routh left a note, in a box to a friend.
“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you," reads the handwritten letter. "I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job."
Prominent Dems continue to demagogue Trump, calling him an existential threat to democracy who, like Hitler, is so evil he must be stopped, all means justified. Just this weekend, Kamala Harris claimed Trump wants to “terminate the Constitution,” something he charged Democrats with wanting to do. The Federalist believes the Dems are grooming assassins, arguing, “The federal government, the Democratic Party, and the legacy media have, by many small steps, assembled an assassin pipeline.” Maybe that’s why the DOJ released the assassin’s $150K offer, an unofficial bounty.
Two hours after the attempt on Trump in Palm Beach, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries lambasted “extreme MAGA Republicans,” saying “We must stop them.” David Plouffe, kingmaker to Barack Obama and now campaign wizard for Kamala Harris, said in 2016, “It is not enough to simply beat Trump. He must be destroyed thoroughly. His kind might not rise again.” And Hillary Clinton, showing no contrition for her vicious slanders, recently said that everyone who still supports Trump should be sent to re-education camps. Channeling Mao and Lenin, I guess.
Finally, Nancy Pelosi has even given a masterclass on the political strategy of smears.
“We call it the wrap-up smear,” she said. “You smear somebody with falsehoods and all the rest, and then you merchandise it.” How? You give it to the press, who then report the smear. and then you sell it to the public. She called it a self-fulfilling prophesy. No doubt there are plenty of examples of such villainy in American political history — the 1800 election was really dirty — but I doubt any of the players sounded quite as giddy as Pelosi did when she boasted of the unethical tactics. Watch here.
Is it any wonder two Act Blue crazies heard the dog whistle and tried to kill Trump? Is it any wonder 28% of Democrats said in a recent poll they think America would be better off if Trump had been assassinated? Another 25% of Dems weren’t sure. So, 53% yes or maybe. The Dems make no secret of their loathing. They wear it proudly.
The more telling question is why.
I heard the Daily Wire’s Andrew Klavan say the other day that the Dems want to kill Trump because he tells the truth, saying out loud the things that they don’t dare admit. They don’t hate him because he insults people. They hate him because he spreads information they want to censor. My list: That we need fossil fuels to live, that DEI is ruining our merit-based society, and that men are crushing women’s sports. That an open border is both unsustainable and corrosive, that we are on the brink of World War III, that crime is rampant and that inflation is crushing consumers.
Kamala Harris has not pledged to do anything to change these things. Perhaps that is why, in addition to pointing rhetorical firearms in Trump’s direction, she is talking about censorship, about stopping these assertions coming from MAGA by labeling them as disinformation and getting Social Media companies to censor them. As her running mate Minnesota Gov Tim Walz put it, “There’s no guarantee for free speech on misinformation or hate speech.” Actually there is. It’s called the First Amendment.
And there’s no way to put this subtly — Thank God for Elon Musk, whose purchase of Twitter/X gave conservatives a public square in which to express themselves, an act of grace that Musk is now being investigated for by a vengeful, politicized SEC. Or, as President Biden said in announcing the inquiry, “There’s a lot of ways” to get him.
But I have an idea that the other reason for their vicious hatred is that, very simply, Donald Trump and a new conservative media landscape are making inroads into the Democrats’ long-held ownership of American culture. Hollywood still owns movies of course, though its audience size is shrinking as consumers tire of gay Disney princesses and female gladiators. But on Social Media, Trump is dominant worldwide.
Consider:
In Cologne, Germany, thousands came out to hear this song, and sing “Meow, Meow, Meow” in its chorus, inspired by Trump’s allegation that Haitian migrants are eating cats and dogs. Watch it here.
In Tokyo, Trump supporters walked down the streets with a larger-than-life version of 45 on a pedestal, their arms raised in the Fight, Fight, Fight pose. Watch here.
In Uganda, children were filmed re-enacting the first assassination attempt. Think about this — children in Africa saluting his bravery. Watch it here.
Dems may still own the culture, but he threatens it. He has already realigned the parties — Dems now the elitists, GOP now for the middle and working classes. He has made progress among two stubborn constituencies — black voters, and New Yorkers. And he has made inroads, thanks to Barron Trump, among Generation Z voters.
You can tell in the memes. As they say, Trump is breaking the Internet.
Right on, Johanna!
What a great article Johanna! Your clarity keeps this political article from being partisan. Listening to the Democratic Party leaders like Jeffries, sound like it was Democratic Party candidates that were targeted for assassination.
